What are the biggest lessons you have learned in the corporate world?
I’ve learned to be present, not perfect.
Most projects, especially large ones, have many variables.
Often I’ll find myself in a position where I have competing priorities, tight deadlines, recurring meetings, and plenty of decision makers to interact with.
There is certainly value in collecting/auditing data and focusing on precision, but there is a threshold to be mindful of. If precision is of the highest priority, then be sure to focus on that. Otherwise, do not try to be perfect at the expense of holding up a significant project. You may be surprised that you have enough information and expertise to keep the project moving forward.
Most executives appreciate timeliness and easy to digest analysis that can help convert knowledge into action. If you are going to miss a deadline, let your colleagues know as soon as you are able.
The specific example I shared above may not apply to all professions in the corporate world, but the rule of thumb generally is:
Be present, not perfect.
